Description

DeepBx is an X-ray backscatter inspection system for detection and identification of threats hidden within or behind concrete walls. Four key features distinguish DeepBx from other backscatter approaches: • Ultra-compact Ku-band 1-MeV linac generating energy and current modulated X-ray pulses. Such pulses allow temporal coding of the penetration depth of X-rays within the wall. inspected object. • Fast, time-resolving large area scintillation X-ray detectors. These detectors based on cerium-doped fluorophosphate glass and can be fabricated using conventional glass technology. • Fast, adaptive electronics, in combination with time-resolving scintillation detector and silicon photomultipliers, allow effectively instantaneous measurements of the intensity of backscatter X-rays. • An algorithm of recursive subtraction of detector signals in successive layers below the surface of the wall. Thus, the value of the signal from the backscatter photons formed at a given depth of the object, and its density determined. The final result is a three-dimensional map of the wall and its internal structure, to a depth not achievable with current standard approaches, no matter the algorithms involved. The final system design is portable and transportable.
