Description
U.S. forces need to be equipped with the best defensive systems available. Among these systems, smoke and obscurants have been used for decades. The use of electromagnetic guidance techniques for munitions require sophisticated countermeasures in order to protect the warfighter from being easily targeted. Graphite based obscurants can serve as one potential countermeasure if fast, precise and reliable deployment is realized. In this Phase I project TDA will use experiments and computational fluid dynamic modeling to design an obscurant deployment device. This device will be capable of producing a cloud at least 5 meters in diameter and 10 meters long. In the option period we will test the deployment mechanism with an explosive ejection. In the Phase II project, TDA will use the knowledge gained in Phase I to refine the design. TDA will construct and test prototype deployments unit under ballistic conditions.
