Description

As a result of the Disconnected, Intermittent, and Low-Bandwidth (DIL) environment, documenting and transmitting information about medical interventions and care provided to a wounded warrior, from the point of injury in the deployed environment through the time they are moved across each role of care, continues to present challenges. The challenge comprises two parts: 1) the documentation and capture of data electronically as the patient is being treated; and 2) the hand-off and movement of that data as patient is transferred. Medics, at point of injury, need their hands to stabilize and treat the patient. This leaves documentation as a secondary or tertiary priority. Phase I of our Patient Movement research demonstrated the feasibility of new techniques and hardware to address these issues with Hands-Free data acquisition, as well as data transfer approaches that leverage existing mobile technologies, including Near Field Communication, QR Code, and Device-to-Device methods. This Phase II program will expand on the prototyped capabilities of Phase I producing a complete, cross-platform mobile prototype that demonstrates these new methods, and accompanying devices that can be fielded and demonstrated during mock military exercises. Phase II will result in finalized designs and methods ready for Phase III and commercialization of these new capabilities.
