Description
Light weight silicon carbide (SiC) based ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) are currently being considered for military gas turbine engine combustor parts operating at higher temperatures (≥1310°C). However, such composites suffer from surface recession in the high temperature combustion environment of the turbine engine with high water vapor contents. Moreover, there are issues associated with the currently utilized manufacturing technologies for the SiC based CMCs. UES, Inc. in collaboration with Pennsylvania State University proposes to develop advanced processes to manufacture environmentally resistant CMC combustor parts. Relevant characteristics of the fabricated parts will be evaluated.
