Description
A vessel that is multi-modal in that it can operate in three modes: 1) slow speed on the surface in full displacement mode; 2) high speed on the surface in hydrofoil mode; 3) semi-submersible stealth mode. The vessel is modular in that it can carry interchangeable modules in the payload section. When the vessel is in semi-submersible mode, the payload section will be below the waterline and therefore will need to be watertight. Modular payloads will either be secured to the deck or “hung” on rails from an overhead. The hanging concept would allow more flexibility to adapt the vessel to an Unmanned Underwater Vehicle (UUV) host that the UUV can return to for recharging, data exchange, and communications. The payload modules will be shaped hydrodynamically so that when they are installed, they become integral with the form of the vessel. The vessel will also have the ability to operate without any modules installed. The vessel will have three operating modes: 1) Semi-submersible with minimal, low observable surface expression in order to maximize survivability through stealth; 2) Hydro foil with minimum draft and survivability through maximum speed; and 3) full displacement mode for slow speed operations in low threat environments. The modules will be watertight and dry, therefore adding positive buoyancy to the vessel. The vessel and/or the modules will have a buoyancy compensation system that can achieve maximum buoyancy and minimal weight for hydrofoil operation or slightly positive buoyancy for semi-submersible operation. The hydrofoils are installed in the void area between the hulls so that the vessel can beach without damaging the hydrofoils.
