Description

CalWave’s xNode is enabling the Ocean Internet of Things by providing power and access to data offshore. The xNode is a versatile, adaptable, and resilient ocean observing platform with built-in power generation. It is lightweight and low cost, resilient for storm survivability, and easily stores, ships, and deploys. The xNode facilitates and improves a range of existing and novel offshore missions. A standard baseline ocean science sensor suite ensures that every mission maximizes data collection and cross-functional interest. The modular scientific payload compartments can be equipped independently and easily configured in the standardized hull. Next to access to remote power and data offshore, the xNode stands out through innovative features such as a digital twin, on-board edge computing and a lightweight and compact size enabled by an innovative inflatable hull. CalWave draws on prior expertise in wave energy converter development and utilizes existing subsystems and elements such as our drivetrain power generation unit, advanced controls and numerical simulations. In Phase 1: CalWave will work with partners Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute and Scripps Institute of Oceanography to determine their ideal sensor and power requirements for an ocean observing platform. CalWave will use that info to finalize the inflatable hull size and selecting all components and suppliers. Finally, the interface between the xNode, satellite communication, and end user will be developed to allow easy access to sensor and ocean information.
