Applications running on powerful clusters represent invaluable assets for use cases such as decision support and clinical information. However, in emergency situations such as after a natural disaster or in the battlefield access to such powerful systems might be limited or nonexistent. In such scenarios, users have to rely on the limited resources they have on-site which are typically mobile devices. ATCorp proposes CluNet, a software solution that combines two or more mobile devices into a cohesive network. CluNet partitions and distributes complex problems across devices in the network and combines the results to present it to the user. CluNet adopts a modular and highly agile architecture to manage nodes, resources, and tasks to optimize and maximize the use of available mobile devices such as phones and tablets. CluNet introduces two terms: resource-unit and work-unit. Recourse-unit refers to a resource such compute power, memory, network bandwidth, or storage. Work-unit refers to the smallest task that can be carried out independently of other tasks or work-units. Each work-unit requires a number of resource-units to produce a result. Resource and work units are normalized across devices and used by CluNet to find the optimal task distribution for a given mobile cluster.
