Project Summary Abstract It is crucial that parenting women with substance use disorderSUDreceive support for maintaining their treatment goals and looking after their infantsphysicalemotionaland safety needsMothers recovering from SUD are at greater risk of not having the support of traditional extended families or social networks in their parentingand many lack coping skillsA mobile healthmHealthplatform that engages the mothers with their case managers through mobile phones or wifi connected tablets will make the case management more efficient and referrals more appropriate and timelyThis electronic Plan of Safe CareePOSChas the potential to be disseminated across the nation for better coordination and support for postpartum mothers with SUD and their substance exposed infants and case managersFor this RSBIR Phasewe will develop an mHealth platform calledSAFE BOTHSAFE BOTH is designed to include microlearning parenting information and support materialsintegrated short messaging service for appointment reminders and contact information updatesa one stop calendar for infant and maternal appointments and contact lists for referralsThe SAFE BOTH platform will build on a POSCas modeldeveloped by Christiana Hospital in DelawareChristianain use in all of its hospitalsand will add in a customizable contingency management system with prize incentivesInput from other states will also be providedOur expectation is that by establishing an ePOSC with a case management approach for both the mother and infant it will be possible to reduce issues of fragmented postnatal maternal and infant careimprove interactions with the Delaware Division of Family Services and other service providersand improve the communication required for an effective POSCPhaseSpecific AimsDetermine through formative research with case managerscaregiversand relevant stakeholders the needs and requirements for a ePOSC for use with postpartum women with SUD and their infantsBuild the prototype SAFE BOTH platform to compile information to facilitate collaborative careCCand case management for the mother infant dyadandPilot test the SAFE BOTH for feasibilityusability and acceptanceThe short term impact of SAFE BOTH will be to improve the communication between providers and postpartum mothers to provide a quality POSCThe long term impacts of SAFE BOTH are expected to be increased attendance at medical and social work appointmentsimproved parenting skills for postpartum mothers and infant caretakersand improved state based collaborative care case management Project Narrative The platformentitled SAFE BOTHis designed to improve the efficiency and timeliness of collaborative care management for the case manager and the postpartum mother with a substance use disorder by providing an electronic Plan of Safe CareePOSCaccessible via mobile phone or tabletThrough an ePOSC that uses contingency management and prize incentives for participationit will be possible to engage the mothers with parenting tips and guidance pushed out to smartphones or tabletsto send alerts via text messages for appointment reminders and contact information updatesand to provide a one stop calendar and referral listSAFE BOTH will provide an innovative system to improve POSC case management which in turn will make it possible for states to provide high quality services and excellent support for the mother infant dyad
