Project Summary Abstract The goal of this proposal is to fabricate and test a novelfully integratedvolumetric high density microelectrode array and ribbon cable assemblyand the means to surgically deploy this array in subcortical target tissue within the brainDevices based on our indwellingvolumetric multi electrode arrays and their delivery vehicles would improve treatment options for a myriad of deep brain stimulationDBSapplicationsand have the potential to make a significant impact in neurosurgical applicationsDBS is a fast developing field of medicinewhich has been shown to have efficacy in treatment of conditions including Parkinson s Diseasesevere depressionmorbid obesityand obsessive compulsive disorderCurrent DBS electrodes are typically relatively large in diameter and have low stimulation specificitywith only small numbers of electrodes being able to be implanted into sub corticaldeep brain structuresThe team at Bionic Eye Technologiesin collaboration with researchers at Harvard Medical SchoolMassachusetts General Hospital and Cornell Universityhave developed advanced microfabrication processes that enable the manufacture of smallercontrolled stresssplaying volumetric microelectrode arrays outlined belowand this proposal concerns fabrication and testing of an improved version of our pilot arrays that integrates the ribbon cable containing the insulated leads with the microelectrode arrays themselvesThis project will result in superior electrode arrays for use in DBS stimulationimproving the surgical outcomes and quality of life for patients with many neurological conditions Project Narrative The goal of this project is to develop a high density microelectrode array and ribbon cable assemblyusing advanced microfabrication techniquesThis device will be able to be implanted into deep brain structuresand used for treatment of conditions such as depressionParkinson s disease and morbid obesityThe technology will be a game changer in the field of deep brain stimulationproviding a vastly improved device for patients with theseand otherneurological conditions
