Description

The objective of this STTR research program is to develop a reduced order modeling (ROM) approach for efficiently and accurately representing computed CFD ship airwake data. This approach will enable the streamlined integration of the airwake flowfield with real-time piloted flight simulation environments, reduce the storage requirements of the original CFD airwake model by a factor of 1000, and preserve the frequency content of interest to the flight dynamics (typically 0.2 to 2.0 Hz) of the original CFD dataset. Objectives include developing user friendly software tools for integration, verification, and user-selectable integration parameters (such as ROM fidelity, etc.) for integrating the ROM airwake model in piloted flight simulations. In Phase I, the effort will focus on designing and developing the ROM approach as well as testing the feasibility of the approach to meet the data reduction and fidelity requirements. In Phase II, a prototype real-time ROM airwake modeling tool will be developed based on the Phase I results and demonstrated for a GFI NAVAIR ship airwake dataset within the Analysis for Enhanced Dynamic Interface (SAFEDI) offline simulation tool. In Phase III, the STTR technology will be transitioned to the Navy for specific ship/aircraft configurations of interest.
