Description

The Air Force needs to modernize their training tools for their aircraft maintenance technicians in order to reduce costs and increase aircraft availability rates. Reliance on traditional processes is slow for the modern warfighter when rapid advances in aircraft technology and processes are becoming increasingly prominent. Aircraft downtime is critical to the Air Force and modernized tools can be leveraged in order to meet the demands of the warfighter. An Augmented Reality training system is needed to reduce the cognitive burden and training time of aircraft maintenance technicians while improving their effectiveness and efficiency in performing aircraft repairs. The proposed solution will reduce the training costs of maintenance technicians as well as increase their immersion and learned material. This in turn greatly decreases turnaround time on downed aircraft, resulting in increased aircraft availability rates. CRG will conduct a feasibility study to validate the utility of an Augmented Reality training system on Air Force maintenance as well as commercial aircraft maintenance needs.
