Description

Batteries have become a necessity in the field of battle. Soldiers often carry over 30 lbs. of batteries to run the required equipment for dismounted missions, and soldier power demands are still growing. Current rechargeable battery solutions (e.g. BB-2590) are heavy and present significant safety challenges upon ballistic impact. New lithium-based cell technologies offer the potential to significantly increase capacity and run-time. Next generation battery pack designs must address not only capacity and weight but also impact and safety challenges to the operators. Integrating new materials (e.g. non-flammable electrolyte) addressing battery safety with next generation cell chemistry and design will address these critical dual needs of the Army. Cornerstone Research Group, Inc. proposes to develop an Advanced BB-2590 Battery using a non-flammable, high specific energy cell integrated into the BB-2590 form factor. The Advanced BB-2590 Battery will significantly increase pack specific energy over existing BB-2590 technology while simultaneously increasing safety. The new cell technology will also be extensible to other military battery systems such as CWB.
