The goal of this project is to develop novel technology for predicting drug induced kidney injury such as caused by systemic antimicrobialsdiureticsanticancer agentsand anti inflammatory drugsDrugs cause approximatelypercent of communityand hospitalacquired episodes of acute renal failurebut the incidence in older adults may be as high aspercentA significant problem is that while there are many drugs that have the potential to cause drug induced kidney injurythere are few tools available for prevention of drug induced kidney injuryDrug induced kidney injury often occurs prior to detecting alterations in renal function or of biomarkers associated with injuryIn this projectwe will develop novel technology that can be used to test drugspreclinicalclinicalor after marketfor potential to cause drug induced kidney injuryIn developing the technologyconsidered will be the various components and processes underlying pathophysiology associated with acute kidney injury caused by various drugsAdditionallywe will perform validation of this technologyOnce validatedthe technology will be ready to commercializeincluding making the technology available to our existing base of pharmaceutical company customersto regulatory agenciesand for academic teaching and academic research use The goal of this project is to develop technology that can be used to predict the potential of a drug to cause acute kidney injuryThe project will provide a tool that can be used to inform preclinical drug developmentinform clinical trial designspredict product safetyevaluate potential adverse event mechanismsas well as contribute to the understanding of mechanisms involved in drug induced kidney injury
