Description
In this Phase II SBIR project, Dirac Solutions Inc. (DSI) proposes to design and develop three units of fully functional prototypes of a novel and reliable Wireless Intercom System (WICS) for V-22 Osprey aircraft based on ultra-wideband (UWB) signaling and a unique modulation scheme. Taking advantage of short coded pulse transmission, DSI’s UWB communications system is specially designed for reliable operations in harsh metallic, obstructive, and high EMI environment of V-22 aircraft. Through innovative RF design, DSI’s ultra-wideband communications systems eliminates the limitations and danger associated with multiple cables inside and outside the aircraft for the existing “tethered communications”, allowing high fidelity voice communications for use by the crew inside and outside the aircraft within 300 ft. The proposed transceiver developed for WICS will also be integrated with the pilot’s helmet for ease of use during operations. Building upon previous success of DSI’s other UWB communication systems for shipboard communications and nuclear power plant sensor data communications, DSI is uniquely positioned to develop a reliable inter-communications system for V-22 aircraft. The three prototype units developed in this Phase II. project will be tested and evaluated both in controlled laboratory environments and at the representative operational environment.
