Description

Development of an efficient device capable of concentrating ultrafine radioactive particulate aerosols is essential to the detection of nuclear detonations using a Radionuclide Aerosol Sampler and Analyzer (RASA) system as well as U.S. Navy’s development of a fast acting naval radiation detection system. We propose to develop an efficient device for ultrafine particulate aerosol concentration and separation based on our DYNASWIRL® technology. The unique swirl generation technology to be used in this project is able to subject the ultrafine particulate aerosols to strong centrifugal force to achieve the near complete particulate concentration and separation. In Phase I we will evaluate different design concept and conduct extensive numerical simulations to evaluate device performances under different design parameters and operation conditions, combine artificial neural network and optimization schemes to identify candidate designs that can meet the required collection efficiency requirement while minimizing the pressure drop across the device. The selected designs will go through the fabrication, verification, and validation in small scale in Phase II to ensure a full scale aerosol concentrator for RASA system can be successfully developed.
