Description

Recent advances in new, solid state radar technology, signal processing techniques, and the use of actively scanned electronic arrays (AESA) by our adversaries has alerted many defense leaders to the fact that the U.S. no longer maintains technological supremacy in electronic warfare (EW). Advanced detection radars employ new electronically scanned apertures and incorporate many modes of operation, including FMCW waveforms. Modern digital, solid state radars have the ability to take advantage of agile waveform techniques which can rapidly vary pulse repetition patterns, carrier frequency, pulse width, modulation type, polarization, and scan intervals. Newer adaptable radar systems may also continuously change waveforms in order to mitigate channel effects or provide optimum returns based on target radar cross section (RCS) in order to try to maximize their signal-to-noise-plus-interference ratio (SINR). This seemingly random and diverse set of modern radar threats causes traditional Electronic Support (ES) systems to 1) miss-identify pulses; 2) inaccurately classify/identify threats; and in some cases prevents detection, classification and identification entirely. Expedition Technology has developed new and innovative digital signal processing de-interleaving algorithms to better detect LPI emitters and identify threat radars using single pulse identification and to also resolve ambiguities between multiple solid state radar emitters.
