Description
This proposal addresses two technologies for similar class of applications. First is a reduced cost thermite torch for thermal breaching, second is a reactive material round for ballistic breaching. Ballistic breaching uses 12 GA inert metal powder rounds to destroy door locks, deadbolts, and hinges. EMPI has developed a reactive material (RM) round compatible with current handheld 12GA breaching shotguns. The round combines kinetic energy damage with impact initiated energetic reactions. The RM reaction will produce an overpressure that results in additional target damage in excess of the impulse delivered by the powdered metal in architectural and automotive doors. EMPI developed the TEC torch with extensive input from US SOF for breaching applications. A portion of the potential TEC Torch market comprised of police and firefighters is eliminated by product cost. To serve these markets EMPI is developing a low-cost version through focus on reduced manufacturing cost. A novel slurry deposition allows high throughput manufacturing and enhanced safety. Phenolic paper tube used in pyrotechnic devices and munitions is being evaluated as an additional cost saving. Compressed ceramic or bentonite clay material can perform as a nozzle at a fraction of the graphite nozzle price used in the military version.
