Description

In Phase I, ISSI will design and demonstrate a laser absorption-based sensor for time-resolved measurements of combustion fuel/product concentrations (H2O, CO, CO2 and fuel) and gas temperature within the detonation channels and nozzle exit-plane of a rotating detonation rocket engine (RDRE). The goal of this STTR is to develop a single sided sensor that plugs into the outer wall of the RDRE similar to a pressure transducer or ion probe. Laser light will travel twice across the RDE channel as it is emitted and collect from the same location. The pressure, and temperature of the RDRE require special attention due the extreme operating environment, and care will be taken selecting the absorption lines appropriately. The operating frequency of the RDRE is another area that will require special care, and fortunately, laser based techniques are capable of measuring frequencies into the megahertz range. Another feature of the proposed research is to be able to examine the data in minutes rather than weeks. ISSI has teamed with Stanford University for this STTR due to their fundamental knowledge and long history in laser absorption techniques. A proof of concept demonstration is planned in an RDRE or similar environment at the Naval Postgraduate School.
