Description

New technology that facilitates detection and management of wildfires on forest lands is criticalfor enhancing the protection of the nation's forested lands and forest resources. The newtechnology will also help maintain the existence of healthy and productive forest ecosystems aswell as provide new information to fire service personnel for understanding wildfire events.Intellisense Systems Inc. (ISI) proposes to investigate and develop a new Fire WeatherObservation Sensor (FWOS) system to meet this critical need. ISI will use a combination ofnewly developed sensors and commercially available sensors housed in a unique hand portablefire weather system containing on-board power harvesting and storage as well as satellite datatransmission capabilities. FWOS will act as a standalone unattended field deployable sensor forremote measurements of fire weather related data and transmit the data via satellitecommunication from anywhere on the globe. During the Phase I development each new sensorwill be tested on benchtop setups and demonstrated during outdoor testing. In parallel the systemarchitecture of the fully integrated Phase II prototype will be developed for near-term fielddeployment. The Phase II development will involve integration of both newly developed andexisting sensors a solar energy harvesting unit communication capabilities and electronicshardware integrated into a single operational prototype.
