Description
Addressing the Navy’s need for high-speed, broadband, secure communications in RF-denied environments between manned platforms and Robotics and Autonomous Systems (RAS), Intellisense Systems, Inc. (ISI) proposes to develop new Robotic Optically Based Autonomous Communications (ROBACOMS). Incorporating laser communication, which is not susceptible to jamming, interception, or detection, ROBACOMS maintains multiple, continuous, simultaneous secure communications to RAS. Specifically, ROBACOMS combines (1) nonmechanical laser scanning for autonomous search, acquisition, tracking, and pointing (ASATP): (2) adaptive data rate processing in low-visibility environments; (3) variable laser divergence, aiding pointing in close-range unmanned aerial vehicle (UAS) tracking; (4) passive, modulated retroreflector communications on low-value UASs; and (5) ASATP equipment on unmanned aircraft or high-value UASs. As a result, ROBACOMS dramatically minimizes system size, weight, power, and cost (SWaP-C), while increasing data security, maximizing transmission capacity, and reducing platform electromagnetic signature. In Phase I, ISI will establish conceptual designs, recommend key components for Phase II detailed design, and generate a baseline prototype design. In Phase II, ISI will build a small run of prototypes to characterize SWaP and link performance, analyze testing, and perform ASATP functional laboratory testing. Phase III finalizes design and performs communication demonstration tests between multiple UAS to quantify tracking coverage while maneuvering.
