Description
To address the Army need for a heat transmitting/heat trapping textile, Intellisense Systems, Inc. (ISI) proposes to develop a new Heat-Transmitting NyCo Textile (HENT), based on a hybrid passive cooling approach by the use of thermal conductivity-enhanced textile-grade nylon yarns with individual filament sizes optimized for optical transparency in the mid-infrared region. The novel use of nanoparticle-infused nylon fibers with predetermined filament sizes will enable the new textile to transmit heat from the body by convective and radiative heat transfer. As a result, this smart textile offers efficient personal thermal cooling for the entire body while retaining standard textile properties without significant cost or weight penalty, which directly addresses the PEO Soldier requirements for future military clothing. In Phase I, ISI will design, fabricate, and demonstrate a single-layer HENT fabric prototype for personal cooling capabilities. In addition, fabric samples along with the technical specifications and cost analysis will be provided. In Phase II, ISI will continue building on the test results and designs from Phase I, and cooling functionality will be demonstrated through measurements made according to standard test methods. A final report consisting of design, development, and test methods will be submitted along with physical samples for government evaluation.
