Description
To address the Navy need for a novel virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and/or mixed reality (MR) headset equivalent of advanced flight simulator display systems, Intellisense Systems, Inc. (ISI) proposes to develop a new Advanced Wide-Angle Augmented-Reality Headset Simulator Display (AWARE-HSD) based on an innovative integration of a wide field-of-view (FOV) aplanatic reflective collimator optics, a high-resolution tiled scanning laser picoprojector light engine with a foveating optical element, and a multiplexed video parsing electronic processor. Specifically, the innovation in the proposed system design will enable the AWARE-HSD to perform equivalent to or better than current flight simulator display systems and meet all Navy’s requirements. As a result, the AWARE-HSD offers panoramic high-resolution, high frame-rate imagery with full motion tracking, allows the users/pilots see all cockpit instruments and interact with each other safely. In Phase I, ISI will design AWARE-HSD that meets or exceeds the Navy’s requirements, and determine its feasibility through experiments addressing human factor issues, and develop a prototype plan for Phase II. In Phase II, ISI will develop and demonstrate a functional prototype AWARE-HSD, perform pilot evaluations of its performance, compare it with current flight simulator display systems for potential replacement, and identify areas for improvement.
