Description

Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) are a dangerous and effective weapon system that today’s military warfighters and innocent civilians regularly experience. IEDs are created with randomly assembled materials and their payloads may include projectiles, biological toxins, and other dangerous items that can cause injury or death to personnel and equipment. Detection and neutralization of these weapons from a safe distance is important for the advancement of our war against terrorism and the safety of US troops, its allies, and civilians. Integrated Solutions for Systems (IS4S) propose dual Air-Dropped GPS guided munitions using multiphase blast explosive (MBX) warheads to neutralize the IED after a Group 3 drone has detected it. The IS4S developed MBX warhead will neutralize the IED by triggering the pressure plates via small diameter metal particle surrounded explosive or large diameter pre-formed blast fragments. Both warheads use a modified version of the Gurney equation to determine velocity of those particles. The warhead design, simulation, and selection will be based on target susceptibility and response and will be the focus of Phase I.
