Description
With in situ data management favoring workflows composed of multiple simulations and analyses connected in transit on heterogeneous machines, scientists and engineers need for a tool that enables them to create data extracts, visualizations, and interactively monitor and steer their simulations. JMSI is developing SCOREBOARD, an easy to use library for data extract production and simulation monitoring and steering that can operate in situ or in transit, bridging simulation and analysis codes. SCOREBOARD is inspired by VisIt/Libsim(LLNL), Uintah(ASCR), and ADIOS(ORNL). The system can be expanded to support more simulations, architectures, and generalize to composite in transit workflows. SCOREBOARD Phase I research produced an early prototype system for in transit data extraction, monitoring, and simulation steering. SCOREBOARD lets simulations stage data to a separate analysis program that uses efficient algorithms to create extracts. SCOREBOARD enables the user to manage extracts and perform simulation steering through a custom user interface in VisIt and HPC FieldView visualization tools. The Phase II research will address the following objectives: Prototype enhanced data model and integrate in additional simulations. Establish feasibility of heterogeneous data extraction algorithms and rendering, using and enhancing exascale libraries. Establish feasibility of in transit optimizations, adding support for hybrid data reductions across analyses and improved staging using ADIOS 2. Prototype infrastructure for monitoring and steering of components within a composite in transit workflow. Prototype integrated infrastructure to develop browser-based user interface for composite in transit workflows.
