Description
Bird strike collisions pose a serious hazard for civilian and military aircraft. Air Force rotorcraft, such as the HH-60G Pavehawk, are increasingly susceptible due to their low altitude operation, frequent take-offs and landings, and operation in remote areas. Front facing windscreens are the most vulnerable part of rotorcraft as bird impact can cause windscreen penetration and catastrophic collisions with the pilot. The loss of human lives and aircraft from bird strike has heightened awareness surrounding inadequate windscreens, and new requirements under MIL-HDBK-516C will require improved transparencies. New materials are therefore needed to enhance the survivability of rotary platforms, increase operational readiness and protect pilots and crew. Luna Innovations is developing a tough, impact resistant polymer nanocomposite system that delivers enhanced bird strike protection, abrasion resistance, and water repellency to rotorcraft windscreens. The nanocomposite-based transparency will provide increased levels of impact resistance and energy absorption/dissipation. This end result of the multi-phase development program will be a MIL-HDBK-516C qualified transparency with improved bird strike resistance, optical clarity, and environmental durability.
