Description
Current reserve batteries used for munitions provide a 20 year shelf life, operate under extreme temperatures, and withstand harsh forces from acceleration and high spin rates. However, future munitions require extended operation time and pulse power capabilities that current technologies cannot provide. Lynntech is proposing to develop a next generation reserve battery based on Li/CFx chemistry with a much higher energy density than current lithium oxyhalide reserve batteries. Our approach is based on an advanced CFx cathode which improves the pulse power and low temperature performance of existing Li/CFx batteries. This advancement is combined with a novel reserve battery configuration which greatly improves the energy density of the packaged system while preserving the long shelf life, ruggedness, and rapid rise time of traditional reserve batteries. The Phase I effort will focus on cell development to demonstrate improved energy density and pulse power capability as well as component-level development of the novel reserve configuration. During the Phase II, fully packaged prototype reserve batteries will be fabricated and tested for performance under extreme temperatures and physical forces.
