Description

Current field sterilizers are large, power-intensive systems that present a logistical burden to forward-deployed resuscitative surgical facilities. There is a need for a low-cost, person-transportable medical sterilizer capable of sterilizing small surgical tools and trays in a Role 1-2 tactical environment. This Phase I SBIR will design and test a breadboard sterilization system that demonstrates the feasibility of the proposed technical solution as a Portable Ruggedized Energy Efficient Medical Sterilizer (PREEMS) for the Marine Corps. In the Phase I option, input from end-users and regulatory consultants will contribute to the design of a prototype that meets all objective requirements listed in the solicitation. The Phase II research will build the prototype which will be evaluated to demonstrate its capability in meeting the performance goals defined in the Phase II development plan and the Marine Corps requirements for the PREEMS device. The prototype will be tested over a range of parameters including numerous deployment cycles. The results from evaluations will enable the design to be refined into a final prototype that will meet Marine Corps and FDA 510(k) requirements. The Phase II will conclude with a a Phase III development plan to transition the technology for Marine Corps use.
