Description

To meet the current and future power needs for space applications in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), high power and high energy storage technologies are necessary. Lithium-ion batteries have sufficient energy density to store energy in between solar charging, yet reduced performance at high rates of discharge and short cycle life. Ultracapacitors can operate efficiently at high rates of discharge, but lack the energy density required to be useful for the length of typical discharge periods. Advanced technologies with high power and energy densities as well as long cycle life are required to support missile defense satellites. Lynntech proposes to develop an Internal Nanohybrid Battery-Capacitor (InterNano BatCap) single energy storage device consisting of internal hybridation of battery and ultracapacitor electrode materials to provide high energy density, high power density, long cycle life, and high safety over wide temperature ranges. During Phase I, Lynntech will design, fabricate and test InterNano BatCap cells built on internal nanohybridation of multiple electrode materials and stable electrolytes. During Phase II, Lynntech will optimize nanohybrid electrodes and electrolytes, and work with a manufacturer to construct a prototype InterNano BatCap device for testing in a simulated environment. The cycle life testing will be performed to ensure capacity retention. Approved for Public Release | 18-MDA-9817 (23 Oct 18)
