Description

Particulate matter from vehicle emissions is a leading airborne pollutant in today's population centers. It has many adverse health effects, some of which can be severe. In order to combat this problem, cities must be able to accurately measure particulate matter using a network of sensor that provide accurate, localized data. Not only can this be used to issue warnings to inhabitants during periods of poor air quality, but it can also inform mitigation strategies and provide feedback on the effectiveness of those actions. The same principal is proposed here for DoD facilties that are prone to elevated levels of particulate matter, such as military bases and airfields. Using a sensor based on Lunar Outpost's Canary air quality monitor, the DoD would recognize and react to emmission sources that would otherwise pose a threat to personnel health. In addition, augmented sensor systems could be used to detect certain harmful gases in the air or provide environmental data for equipment or vehicles, such as jet engines, that are prone to particulate ingress.
