Description

Nano Terra and the El-Shafei group (North Carolina State University) propose to demonstrate, optimize and expand a universal platform for textile functionalization. The approach is one developed in the El-Shafei group that has already been explored for its utility in cotton, nylon-cotton blends and polypropylene. The functionalization method imparts a high-level of flame retardancy (without halogenate materials) to the textile and serves as an activation process making fibers accessible to attachment of almost any material. The Phase I work will encompass the demonstration and testing (by ASTM standards) of flame retardancy and antibacterial performance of functionalized cotton, NyCo and polypropylene before and after laundering. It will include the extension of the approach to particle attachment and the adaption of the process for one new substrate, e.g. polyurethanes. Furthermore, Nano Terra will leverage its experience and partnerships in chemical warfare agent decontamination to demonstrate a decontamination functionality. A cost estimate for the manufacturing process will be put forward.
