Description

There is currently a strong need for compact, JP-8 fueled, high power density electrical generation for use in UAV, auxiliary power supplies, and portable power. Precision Combustion, Inc (PCI) is proposing to evaluate the viability of an advanced, high TRL generator with high power density (250-500 W/kg) and high specific power for these applications. PCI will collaborate with the primary manufacturer of this generator (developed for commercial applications) and determine feasibility for targeted Air Force applications via detailed examination of its performance metrics. The Phase I Objective will be to develop a detailed cycle map (based on testing at PCI) of the generator, confirm gravimetric and volumetric densities, efficiency, robustness, power quality, and identify modifications/updates required to satisfy targeted Air Force requirements. The benefits, shortcomings, and level of effort required to make it MIL-SPEC compliant will be determined. Additionally, component sourcing, manufacturing, pricing, and application-specific technology licensing for USAF applications will be addressed. During Phase II, PCI will modify, demonstrate, and deliver multiple generators, sized to produce target power output ranging from 1-3 kW. Durability, start-up time, emissions, power conditioning, JP-8 suitability, airframe adaptability, BOP requirements, battery hybridization, scalability, and designs with high fuel to electric efficiency will be examined.
