Description
New CPES concepts are pushing the electrical power demands of U.S. Navy ships continually higher. What makes these technologies fundamentally different are their very high pulse loads and highly distributed, interconnected architectures. Ships cannot support these new technologies without considerable modifications. The ONR-funded Electric Ship Research and Design Consortium produced the Smart Ship Systems Design (S3D) tool to address shortcomings in existing tools, but S3D is still very limited. In its current state, S3D can only perform quasi-static analysis of thermal, mechanical, and electrical loads, which can miss key elements of simulating high pulse loads. S3D also lacks a statistical method for understanding variability in operational mission loads. Finally, system component definitions in S3D do not support set-based design (SBD) philosophies being adopted by other Navy tools, such as RSDE. In this effort, we propose to research and document methods to improve S3D with statistical mission emulators, fully-dynamic time-domain analysis, and surrogate modeling techniques to support early-stage ship design and SBD. Perhaps most importantly, we propose to deliver adaptable modeling strategies so that S3D can evolve and continue to offer valuable analysis as the CPES landscape is still rapidly changing.
