Description
The Missile Defense Agency (MDA) is seeking alternative energy storage solutions that can offer both high energy and high power performance without compromising spacecraft mass or cost budgets. The System for Ultrahigh Rate Gravimetrically Efficient Storage (SURGES), is a drop-in replacement to current spacecraft battery systems. In a single package, SURGES combines emerging high energy and power density battery technologies in a modular power system architecture adapted from other military high-power applications such as engine start on aircraft. Preliminary analyses indicate that SURGES can meet the requirements in the current solicitation at about 25% of the mass of current high energy battery solutions.
