Description
mmWave communications is a key enabling technology that offers extremely high data rate links (e.g., Gbps) due to the significant amounts of bandwidth available at mmWave frequencies. Commercial standards are being developed to capitalize on this technology to bring high capacity systems to the market to enable new applications and services. The advent of commercial technology offers the promise of cost reduction due to commercial volumes of key system components. Additionally, the Army recognizes that future communications capabilities will need to be able to provide reliable communications in Anti-Access and Area Denial (A2AD) operating environments. The Shared Spectrum/InterDigital team has a collectively deep understanding of mmWave propagation, emerging 5G mmWave standards, and tactical communications. Our approach is to leverage our team’s experience and existing commercial relationships to analyze the existing LPD/LPI/AJ features of emerging commercial standards and evaluate the insertion of additional tactically beneficial techniques for improving performance. This evaluation is driven by the overall cost impact to the system recognizing that cost can increase based on both individual components and deviation from emerging standards.
