Description

The Army has identified a need for an autonomous fire control system to better protect its soldiers from enemy combatants. However, the rules of engagement are highly dependent on the tactical situation, requiring an autonomous agent to combine context-based information with traditional sensor inputs to make context appropriate decisions. Fire control systems must have high confidence in their decisions, requiring the integration of multiple sources and types of sensor data, confident identification and selection of appropriate targets, and robust target selection according to prioritization schemes and the tactical situation. To meet this need, Soar Technology proposes Fire control Intelligence and REasoning (FIRE), a fire control system supervisory agent that can perform rapid targeting decisions in complex, uncertain environments. Our system will use a cognitive tactical behavior model and knowledge-based reasoning to rapidly fuse data from multiple input sources and select targets based upon the context of the mission, locations of high value assets, and the presence of human team members. Because the need for this system in the field is so great, Soar Technologies will design the system to be quickly integrated with the existing Flexible Fire Control System (F2CS).
