Description

TDA Research, Inc. (TDA) proposes a photocatalytic oxidizer which interacts with ultraviolet light to destroy organophosphate and volatile organic compounds (VOC) in engine bleed air. We will determine the optimal wavelengths for the destruction of bleed air contaminants, including the organo-phosphorous contaminants such as tricresyl phosphate (TCP). In Phase I, we will evaluate the performance of our system under representative conditions to prove the technical feasibility of the concept and carry out an engineering and economic analysis of the proposed technology. The target is a catalyst that is highly effective in converting potential toxins into less toxic compounds and ultimately into CO2 and H2O, without generating undesirable by-products (such as carbon monoxide). The catalyst must also maintain its performance over long time periods without any loss of activity. In the Phase I Option, we will construct a breadboard system with the preferred photocatalyst and optimal UV source. We will demonstrate stable performance for a minimum of 1000 hours to assess life and durability. We will carry out a preliminary design of the photocatalyst/UV source system and its integration into the engine bleed air system.
