Description
Carbon-carbon (CC) materials are key to the development of hypersonic vehicles, and to maintaining the U.S. defensive edge through development of hypersonic missile systems. The production process for CC materials includes many high heat, high pressure cycles which can produce damage (voids, delaminations, incomplete fiber coating) to the part before it is even deployed for hypersonic flight. New non-destructive evaluation (NDE) instruments and methods are needed to assess manufacturing related damage in a production environment. These same NDE would be an integral part of assessing CC component health once deployed as well. To meet this need, TDA proposes a NDE technique based on of eddy current testing, where the flaws are detected with a portable, low-cost COTS receiver.
