Description
MAX phases are an important class of layered machinable ternary carbides and nitrides that exhibit a unique combination of ceramic and metal properties. In 2011, a new family of two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides – called MXenes – was discovered via selective etching of the ‘A’ element from MAX phases. Texas Biochemicals Inc., has recently developed a novel cost-effective and large-scale synthesis route for producing MXene compounds in-house. In the Phase-I project, Texas Biochemicals Inc. will advance the environmentally benign manufacturing technology for large scale production of cost-effective, high performance, superior quality MXenes. Specifically, we have targeted four MXene compositions that are electromagnetically responsive, electrically conductive and attractive for various emerging applications during this Phase-I project. Collaboration with a leading university with one of the co-inventor of MXene phase compounds and a prime contractor is established to evaluate samples and provide technical guidance. Their input described under Phase I tasks and the letter of support demonstrates their intention to become a commercialization partner leading to near term technology utilization potential.
