Description

Structural health monitoring (SHM) is a new technology in the aerospace industrial environment and is increasingly being evaluated by the industry as a possible method to improve the safety and reliability of structures and thereby reduce their operational cost. Effective SHM systems must possess the ability to detect and track structural damage as well as monitor the actual environment and loading conditions the structure experiences. Current SHM systems utilize PZT actuators and fiber optic (FO) sensors separately to provide this information. In this program, Acellent Technologies Inc. in collaboration Intelligent Fiber Optic Systems Corporation (IFOS) proposes the development of an integrated system approach for a hybrid SHM system consisting of a hybrid PZTFO sensor network, monolithic connector for both sensor types, and data acquisition hardware/software integrated into a single unit that will take advantage of any commonality in electronic components. The proposed hybrid Genielight system will be easy-to-install and use onboard an aircraft and will have a single low-weight, small form factor hybrid diagnostic hardware and software system. Phase I will focus on developing the system architecture and establishing feasibility. The program is fully supported by partners including - The Boeing Company and Bell Helicopter.
