Description
The Global Positioning System (GPS) remains a primary source of globally referenced position and navigation information for elements of the Ballistic Missile Defense System (BMDS).Precise guidance of munitions and missiles, as well as navigation for air, land and sea forces, provided by GPS are strategic advantages for the US military in contested or anti-access/anti-denial regions.An adversary disrupts advantage by eliminating one or more of the three GPS components: 1) The space component (i.e., satellites that transmit the GPS signals), 2) the ground-control component (the controller that coordinates timing) and 3) the user component (i.e., receiver).Jamming or anti-satellite weapons (ASAT) can effectively remove the space and ground components.Aret Associates proposes a novel concept for a theater-wide, Global Navigation System GPS-surrogate to provide Alternative Guidance, Navigation & Control (GN&C) capabilities to US forces.The overall objective is to develop and validate a model that demonstrates the potential of ODIN to provide an alternative navigation capability.ODIN represents a unique capability to enable navigation in GPS denied regions.The broad area coverage and relatively simple receiver requirements make ODIN a powerful asymmetric warfighting component.Arete designed this program to anchor theoretical models enabling subsequent development of a full-fledged system.Approved for Public Release | 17-MDA-9395(24 Oct 17)
