Description
Under SBIR AF083-087, AVID LLC has developed a new morphing (piezoelectric) flight control actuation scheme using conformal smart material actuators to replace servos in Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). A comprehensive comparison to servo actuation has shown the morphing flight control to possess higher reliability, 10X higher control bandwidth, comparable size, weight, and power (SWAP), and more efficient aerodynamics (higher lift-to-drag ratio). Sufficient control authority has been attained in flight tests to ensure a responsive and controllable air vehicle.
