Description

Pre-combustionCO2 removalisanattractivecarboncaptureprocessduetothehigherCO2 concentration in the stream and higher system pressure after the water-gas-shift reaction. These characteristics permit CO2 capture in an energy-efficient and cost-effective way because of hundreds times higher throughput and a much smaller equipment footprint than in current post-combustion CO2 capture scenarios. Current CO2 removal technologies for gasification or future integrated coal gasification combined cycle (IGCC) mainly include solvent-based CO2 capture, and sorbent-based process, which are complicated and energy intensive. Membrane separation in CO2 capture holds the substantial key to the economic viability of our national energy systems because of low energy consumption, capability for continuous operation, ease of operation, and cost-effectiveness. In this program, a novel, robust, high temperature catalytic membrane reaction (CMR) with high selectivity and permeability, excellent hydrothermal and chemical stability, and excellent durability in harsh operating conditions will be developed. The integrated catalytic membrane reaction system will combine in one-stage high temperature water-gas-shift (WGS) reaction with a H2 separation membrane to produce H2 while simultaneously capturing compressed CO2 for further sequestration or other applications.
