Description

All solid-state battery (ASSB) is one of the most promising next-generation battery technologies that is expected to offer significantly enhanced safety and energy density, and that however requires more advanced conductive solid electrolytes. In this SBIR project, by leveraging our recent investigations, Bioenno Tech proposes to develop a new ASSB based on a novel class of Li-S solid electrolyte with high ionic conductivity and the associated nanostructured electrodes with high specific capacities along with good ionic/electronic conductivities. Using this class of electrolyte along with the associated cathode and anode that can be processed with a cost-effective, scalable route, the issues of electrolyte/electrodes interfacial contact in the Li-S ASSB cell can be effectively addressed, leading to more desirable battery performance, including enhanced energy/power densities, improved cyclability, excellent safety, and potentially low costs. Phase I will focus on the feasibility demonstration of proposed technology, through material design, processing, prototyping and characterizations. A full scale Li-S ASSB cell will be prototyped and demonstrated. In the subsequent Phase II, further optimization, scaling up and characterizations will be carried out for both material design/processing, and the cell fabrication, which will pave the way to the successful development of a commercially viable Li-S ASSB product.
