Description

The current state of the art thermal battery technologies will not be able to meet future requirements that call for higher power and capacity with a smaller footprint. The principal avenue for increasing the capacity of thermal battery is to identify and develop new electrode materials that provide higher specific capacity and power performance. The overall objective of the proposed effort is to develop (design, fabricate, test and demonstrate) novel cathode materials for thermal battery with high single cell potential (>2.5V) and high capacity. In previous efforts, CFDRC demonstrated high voltage (>2.5 V) and high capacity (>1000 Amp-sec/gram) materials for thermal batteries using an optimized cell design through single cell testing. The performance of these materials was also demonstrated using 10-cell prototype thermal batteries tested to a load profile provided by Raytheon Missile Systems. In this program, we will demonstrate the manufacturability of these high voltage materials and the capability of these materials to perform in thermal batteries across environmental extremes for an agreed-upon application, such as, HELLFIRE, or JAGM. We will deliver batteries for independent testing by the Army.
