Description

The Defense Health Agency is interested in alternative, non-opiate methods of pain control for wounded servicemen. One potential solution is the use of short duration, high voltage pulses (generally referred to as nanosecond Electric Pulse, or nsEP) to disrupt neural transmission from a wound to the central nervous system.The basic nsEP process is similar to electroporation in Pulsed Electric Field (PEF) processes currently in use in the food processing and wastewater processing markets. Diversified Technologies, Inc. (DTI) has been a leader in development of both research and commercial PEF systems over the last 20 years. During this time, we have gained a significant level of expertise in the application of pulsed, high voltage fields to a range of products, including orange juice, algae, and potatoes.In Phase I, we will build a breadboard nsEP system meeting the majority of the DHA requirements. In Phase II, we will build production prototypes and work towards manufacture and medical device certification with our partners at Lahey Clinic and Old Dominion University. In Phase III, we will transition to manufacturing and sale of the resulting product for both military and commercial applications, either directly or through licensing to a medical electronics company.
