Description

Missiles and munitions require, in the absence of gunner input, an autonomous capability to discriminate between hard targets such as Rolled Homogeneous Armor (RHA) and various other softer targets on impact in real-time. The proposed program will integrate multiple sensing techniques and devices into a single system to realize a robust target discrimination capability. The effort will quantify the reliability of the target discrimination when subjected to varying impact velocities and angles. The effort will also quantify the vulnerability to extraneous structures that may cause false triggers. The Phase II effort develops point-detonation and air burst target classification approaches and develops sensor fusion algorithms to provide a reliable target discrimination output. The Phase II effort will result in prototype systems capable of providing timely input to detonation control system.
