A person using social media can take a seemingly random survey about puppy adoption, the demographic and preference data can be fed to political marketers and that person’s empathy toward puppies can help elect the next President of the United States. That same power can be used to fuel decisions by safety experts, vehicle manufacturers and consumers. Everyday we are surrounded by data that affects our lives. What kind of car do we drive? Who manufactured its parts? How does it perform in safety testing and actual crashes? Are there trends or recalls, or product safety warnings? Based on our demographics and driving habits, what is the safest car for our families? Where can we learn about child safety seats? How can I interest my new driver in safe driving techniques? Traffic fatalities are the leading cause of death in the US for people between the ages of 4-34. How can data inform decision makers, both at home and within industries, to improve transportation safety in our everyday lives? Innovative data structuring and interfaces can put all of this knowledge and power into the hands of those who can benefit the most.
