Description
It is becoming apparent that Additive Manufacturing (AM) systems energy sources have inherent shortcomings that must be overcome to achieve DOD-qualified part fabrication. An ideal AM energy source should have the ability to couple the heating mechanism to the characteristics of the feedstock; it must have in-process inspection capabilities that can track critical parameters; and it must provide feedforward process control capabilities. Micro-Induction Sintering/Melting (MIS/M) is a new additive manufacturing technology developed by Grid Logic that is based on high-frequency induction heating. It permits sintering and melting of metallic powders and wires. The company has demonstrated an ability to tune the MIS/M signal to the characteristics of the feedstock and to achieve a very high degree of heating control. Grid Logic proposes to develop an MIS/M print head operating at multiple frequencies to address the need for an improved AM energy source. This improved AM energy source could significantly improve consolidation efficiency, provide thermal gradient and temperature control. It would include both inspection and closed-loop process control capabilities needed for quality AM production.
