Description
Building on our established thin-film chemical detection technology, Intelligent Optical Systems (IOS) proposes to integrate its highly sensitive multi-agent chemical and toxic chemical detection sensor substrates, for mounting onto a quadcopter camera to assist in identifying/mapping target contaminants. This established optical sensor cladding technology developed at IOS adapts multiple components for high selectivity and sensitivity. We have selected colorimetric indicators for maximal contrast, custom cross-linking polymers for optimal diffusion of each target chemical, and activators that selectively bind to the target analytes, making these detector coatings superior to other colorimetric sensors. This sensor cladding technology has been validated at Edgewood Chemical Biological Center (ECBC) by live-agent challenges, which produced a rapid color change of the cladding upon exposure to <1 uL of aerosolized agents. Vapor testing of chemical agents GB and GD was conducted in collaboration with Calspan–University of Buffalo Research Center (CUBRC) - at concentrations as low as 2 ppm. The proposed detector will be a rugged and stable remote sensor array. Tests and chemical indicators will be selected by the project team pending award and setting of the testing schedule. Candidate events include testing at DPG SK, ECBC M-field, and NSWC Dahlgren.
