Description
The objective of this proposal is to demonstrate the feasibility of producing a decentralized, scalable, rapidly deployable system to treat wastewater streams with high total suspended solids (TSS) content to: 1. Recover a clean, pathogen-free water output that meets potable drinking water standards 2. Recover a dried, pathogen-free solid material, and 3. Optionally recover a concentrated solution of low boiling point constituents (e.g. ammonia) This process is based on the commercially available Janicki Bioenergy (JBE) Advanced Vapor Recompression Distillation (VRD) system, which is currently being applied to the processing of dairy waste streams. A VRD system to treat contaminated wastewater streams will be of immediate use to the DoD. The Military Spec VRD (MS-VRD) system allows for rapid decentralized wastewater treatment, specifically in remote locations such as forward operating bases (FOBs). The MS-VRD is easily shippable and can be quickly commissioned allowing rapid deployment. If an existing wastewater treatment plant becomes damaged due to a natural disaster or attack the MS-VRD can be deployed to continue wastewater treatment at the location. Since the MS-VRD utilizes a non-biological process it does not require a conditioning period and can function immediately upon deployment.
